Tidy Bedroom Ideas
HouseBeautiful.co.uk has launched The Big Declutter Challenge to run throughout the month of March and is asking you to get involved.
March is often associated with spring cleaning, sprucing up the home and having a fresh start. So it's the perfect time to declutter your home to create a more relaxing, organised and stress-free living space.
For each weekend throughout the month, we will provide detailed guides for different areas of the home with decluttering tasks for you to complete.
The first focus is on the hallway.
'The hallway is the passage between home and the outer world – a clutter-free, organised hallway makes life easier on all fronts and creates a beautiful entrance to your family's home,' said The Holding Company, who offers practical organising solutions for your home.
So get involved with the #HBBigDeclutter by following the hallway guide below, with helpful tips and advice from decluttering and storage experts.
Get decluttering
First, it's time to get declutter – get rid of unused items or relocate pieces to elsewhere in the home.
'Separate everything into three piles: keep, storage, and donate,' Andy Briggs, head creative and interior designer at Spaceslide, said.
'If you follow the golden rule of getting rid of anything you haven't used for the past six months – seasonal items aside – you'll be well on the way to recovering your precious space.'
Step 1: Get rid of unused items or relocate to their proper place elsewhere in the home. Wellington boots, for example, may be better suited to being stored in the shed or garage to free up hallway space.
Step 2: Sort through post and file away. Junk mail can go straight in the recycling bin. It's a good idea to have a letter basket by your front door as a place to temporarily store mail rather than having it scattered all over the place.
Step 3: Store gloves, mittens, scarves and hats in a designated box or basket.
Step 4: Make sure coats and jackets are neatly hung up on pegs or hooks.
Step 5: You can create a designated space for keys, such as a bowl or basket.
To keep the hallway clutter free, make sure everyone in the household places items into their correct storage location at all times.

Clean
As soon as you have decluttered, it's time to clean. Make sure to clean and dust every nook, inside storage units, on top of shelves and along skirting boards.
Vacuum the floor and stairs, paying close attention to the door mat. It's also a good idea to give the front steps or outside entrance a deep clean.
Choose the right storage
Once you've decluttered and cleaned, it's time consider your storage solutions.
'As the first room in the house, hallways set the tone and welcome everyone, yet still need to accommodate all the stuff that we bring in and out every day,' said Rebecca Maylon, head of design and product development at Neptune.
Your hallway may already have some stylish and useful storage units that can keep your items neatly tucked away. But if not, here are some handy suggestions for your entrance space.
Console table and baskets
'In a very narrow space, a console from just 33cm deep works best, for teeny spaces even a little bookcase can do a great job,' Rebecca said. 'Choose a console with a lower shelf where lovely willow open baskets can provide invaluable storage for gloves, hats, scarves, and even footwear.

Potboard
'A potboard gives you essentially the same look as a console table but is deeper so can take bigger baskets that will hold more,' Rebecca added.
Shoe rack
'Get a decent concealed shoe rack – most people don't have enough storage so shoes spill out onto the floor,' Kate Ibbotson of the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers (APDO) said.
'Those lucky enough to have an under stairs cupboard could have shelving or cubby holes built into it for shoes.'
Floating shelves
'Ensure you make the most of wall space in your hallway,' Kate said. 'Attach a floating shelf or wall unit on which you can place a dish for your wallet, a place for incoming post and an "action tray."'
Hooks or pegs
'Also consider hooks or pegs for items such as hats and umbrellas,' Kate said. 'Low hooks and cubby holes for children can encourage them to put their possessions in their correct homes.'
